No. 1.
Sir,
Foreign Office to Manchester Chamber of Commerce.
Foreign Office, September 12, 1904.
IN reply to your letter of the 5th instant, requesting to be furnished with information on the subject of the registration of trade-marks in China, I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to state that, according to a telegram which has been received from His Majesty's Minister at Peking, provisional Regulations have been promulgated by the Chinese Government. Details have not yet been received at this Office, but his Lordship understands that the Regulations were published to-day, in the morning Shanghai press.
I am to add, for the information of your Chamber, that the leading importing houses at Shanghai and the Chamber of Commerce there have been fully consulted on the subject by the Commercial Attaché of His Majesty's Legation, and that, before promulgation, the Rules were submitted by Mr. Jamieson to a meeting of leading British importers, and most of the amendments recommended by them were introduced by the Chinese Government at the instance of His Majesty's Minister.
I am, &c.
(Signed) F. A. CAMPBELL
Also to Trade-marks Defence Union, London Chamber of Commerce, and Mr. E. Salaman, mutatis mutandis.
† To Manchester Chamber of Commerce only.
